Tethered, Diana Trout, 2010
Just received my copy of The Pulse of Mixed Media by Seth Aptar and am honored to be amongst the artists included! Tethered (above) is a self portrait in response to Seth's question "Can you share a secret?" This wasn't an easy secret for me to share. Creating imagery brought me further into my "secret." The secret has to do with my feelings about balancing art and motherhood when my children were young.
At that time, I felt tethered. Unable to fly. In retrospect, the "tethering" had nothing to do with motherhood and everything to do with the critic: "To be a good mom, you need to be always present." "You can't have art and motherhood." (blah blah blah).
