Nobody practices art like a little kid. Todays post and video were inspired by a comment from a child and I ran with it. I broke out my never-used Gelatos. These were inherited art supplies and I like 'em. They are really silky smooth and mooshy. Like Portfolios, yes. But even more buttery and smooth. Really a great art material. However, the way they are packaged stinks. I don't need extra brushes or stamps. I just want a basic rainbow of colors.
I ordered a pack meant for kids over here at Amazon that has the rainbow so I'll let you know how the quality is.
Folding vellum produces a beautiful pattern. I'm using a heavier than usual weight vellum from Bazzil (linked below). You can make all sorts of patterns and starbursts, even crumpling.
I hope that this is a simple playful art journal idea for you! You can see where something didn't work out and what I did to make it work. And so the idea - let's make it #practiceart - can be a revolution. Tell your kids.
This video has more chat than usual. I'm not so sure if you really want to hear the ramblings in my brain. Let me know. I tend to want videos that are short and sweet myself. I'm trying to find a good balance.
Quick word on the mists I use. I put some (a good pinch) of PearlEx or Perfect Pearls into a mini mister. You can add water or reinker and water for a great spray. Extend your supplies.
Fun as always!!

Diana, I left a comment over on YT. But I wanted to ask what pen you used to write on top of the gelato page.

Hi Jan, I used the Pentel Pocket Brush pen. It’s refillable pen with a real brush. One of my favs! Linked in the supplies from Dick Blick.

I enjoyed this video and hope you don't mind that I shared it with a new FB group called, A life of art and self Expression. The group is all about making time to do art every day and ways to be inspired.
I am going to get down to your studio one of these days and do some art with you in person!
Here's what I wrote...
I've been enjoying watching Diana Trouts videos. Currently she's trying to get all of us to Practice, practice, practice. Play and just make art... Watching her makes me want to pull out my supplies and just get some color on a page for the fun of it with no expectations...check it out!

Hi! Wonderful blog post that corresponds with your YouTube video. So glad that my little Jubilee could spark a topic of discussion, Which is very important. I am still trying to get comfortable with the idea of practicing, or playing, with art. I was always of the mind that something needed to have practical use to Have significant time spent on it. When I first began art journaling, many people asked me "why am I doing this, what am I going to do with it?" For a long time I shared those ideas, But I am growing and getting beyond them. Today I created something for the sake of creating it. I was simply blessed with free time in the morning and I took advantage of it. After I was done, I liked it, so I shared it on Facebook. Not too long after wards, my brother left a smart alec comment. It shouldn't have hurt, me but it did. A lot. So much so that I really do not feel compelled to create anything else today, And I realize that's a shame. I left what I made up on Facebook, But his comment is making me second guess everything. I just figured Diana that this pertain to what you were trying to say... Of course I love practicing art just for the heck of it, but it really brings you down when someone insults your creation.

I’m so sorry that happened! People can be unwittingly cruel. I hope that you realize that when someone says something mean spirited it about them and not you. I hope you are feeling better today. Keep creating!

I like very much what you say about practising art. It is what I have been thinking for myself lately, trying to put words to it. Sometimes I wonder why somebody so untalented artistically as me is so hooked on art journalling. But then I also know that because I do it a lot I get much more familiar with different materials and techniques, and of course, sometimes it works out beautiful. But like you say, it doesn't have to. Sometimes it doesn't work out, but the ongoing experimenting, play, expression, whatever, brings all kinds of joy and balance into my life. I find it amazing. I wish more people would understand that too. It's such a joy.

That’s just the thing, Libby. Somebody along the line told you that you have no talent. Dang it! Not true. Passion=Talent. I’ve experienced it myself and seen it in so many people. It’s so hard but try to insulate yourself from those harsh people and allow yourself the joy of creativity.g
